Esther Steckelberg Book Room

Esther Steckelberg Book Room

The Esther Steckelberg Book Room operates on the honor system, much like a library. With more than 4,000 books to choose from, we offer something for everyone in both fiction and non-fiction, including a collection of works by local authors.

We also have computers with DSL Internet service, videos, puzzles, games, periodicals, and a collection of renewable energy literature.

During the school year, The Book Room hosts a Preschool Story Hour every Thursday from 10:30a.m. to 11:30a.m. During the summer months, we provide a Summer Reading Program in partnership with River Valley Schools.

Our Book Room is home to a growing collection of local historical memorabilia that includes books, photos, musical instruments from the former MarxoChime Factory, and more.

If you want to relax with a cup of coffee and read a good book or visit with your neighbors, this is the place.

The Esther Steckelberg Book Room is open Monday through Saturday from 10:00a.m. to 12:00p.m., and Monday through Friday from 5:30p.m. to 7:00p.m.

New Troy Book Room now has Online Computers.

The Esther Steckelberg Book Room in the New Troy Community Center now has online computers available for patrons’ use.

“This is really quite an achievement,” Book Room chairwoman Kay English says.   “A recent visitor mentioned that to have a book room functioning just like a library in our community is wonderful, and Friends of New Troy is to be commended.”

In 2007, more than 1,200 people were served by the Book Room, and FONT is predicting greater numbers because of the computers.

Cameron Hanover, a former New Troy resident and RV graduate working for the University of Michigan, secured the donation of four U-M computers, configured them, and then worked with FONT member Mike Metz to set up the units.  Laser printers were donated by other FONT members.

The facility is a “hot spot,” meaning that people with wireless laptop computers can get online at the center.

Volunteers Wendy Foster and Ron Schaffer have been busy entering all of the center’s books into the new system.  The books are already catalogued according to the Dewey Decimal System, but now, with the help of the computers, we are able to search out a particular title or author for patrons.
